Ford: To Build Three Million Vehicles In 2008

Ford Cars

Ford is predicting that it will build three million vehicles, and its North American manufacturing plants will be running at 100 percent capacity, by 2008.

The automaker said capacity in 2008 would be projected at 100 percent “as a result of plant idlings as well as shift eliminations and line speed reductions.”

Under its restructuring plan, Ford expects to close 16 plants within the next six years. Ford has said last week that it would cut $5 billion in annual costs by the end of 2008 by eliminating 10,000 white-collar workers and offering buyouts to all 75,000 union workers.

California Sued Six Automakers Including Ford

Bill LockyerCalifornia’s Attorney General Bill Lockyer has recently filed suit against six of the largest car manufacturers in the US for the billions of dollars in damages caused by greenhouse gases emitted by their vehicles, according to a report from Reuters.

The automakers included in the lawsuit are Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Chrysler and the North American units of Honda and Nissan. Lockyer filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in California and was a part of state’s effort to combat the effects of global warming. Lockyer also said the lawsuit will make the automakers liable for the future monetary damages to California and they will seek hundreds of millions of dollars from the automakers included in the lawsuit.

Only Ford commented on the lawsuit and said the complaint was a “nuisance suit”. The other automakers doest have comments about the issue.

Electronic Stability Control soon to be Standard on all Vehicles

Electronic Stability ControlThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed regulations that would require automakers to install electronic stability control in cars, sport-utility vehicles, minivans and pickups. At the moment stability control comes as standard equipment on many high-end cars but is either optional — at a cost of $300 to $800, or not available at all in others. Once approved, the federal rules are expected to take effect with the 2009 model year and to be phased in over three years.

News reports say that the following automakers currently already offer, or plan to offer, electronic stability control:

• Ford: standard on all new vehicles by the end of 2009.
• GM: standard on vans and SUVs by the end of 2007 and on all vehicles by the end of 2010.
• DaimlerChrysler: standard on all 2007 SUVs and optional on other vehicles.
• Toyota: standard on 2007 Toyota and Lexus SUVs, pickup trucks and minivans, and all Lexus models.
• Honda: standard for 2007 Honda and Acura SUVs, pickups and minivans.

We’ll see if Ford Edge will really conquer the industry’s CUV markets during its release in November.
