Common Vehicle Theft Frauds

Probably the first thing that comes to mind when talking about car thefts will involve smashing the windows, hot-wiring, and getting away with the police. But today, there are new schemes developed by car thieves to successfully steal cars without even noticing them.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) published the most common vehicle theft and fraud schemes of today.

Owner Give-Ups

The vehicle owner lies about the theft of his vehicle and then orchestrates its destruction to collect insurance money. He claims his vehicle was stolen, but then it is found burned or heavily damaged in a secluded area, submerged in a lake, or in extreme cases, buried underground.

30-Day Specials

Owners whose vehicles need extensive repairs oftentimes perpetrate the 30-day Special scam. They will report the vehicle stolen and hide it for 30 days -- just long enough for the insurance company to settle the claim. Once the claim is paid, the vehicle is often found abandoned.

Export Fraud

After securing a bank loan for a new vehicle, an owner obtains an insurance policy for it. The owner reports the vehicle stolen to a U.S. law enforcement agency, but in reality it was illegally shipped overseas to be sold on the black market. The owner then collects on the insurance policy, as well as any illegal profits earned through overseas conspirators who sell the vehicle.

Phantom Vehicles -- An individual creates a phony title or registration to secure insurance on a non-existent vehicle. The insured then reports the vehicle stolen before filing a fraudulent insurance claim. Oftentimes antique or luxury vehicles are used in this scheme, since these valuable vehicles produce larger insurance settlements.

By January you can buy a retail version of the previously rental only Mustang – the 2007 Shelby GT. Similar to the GT-H, the Shelby GT will be equipped with a Ford Racing Power Pack, including a cold-air intake and high-flow exhaust, that punches up power from the 4.6-liter V8 by 25 hp and 20 lb-ft of torque to 325 hp and 330 lb-ft. Expect the retail version GT to also have the Ford Racing Handling Pack used on the GT-H, with a strut tower brace, bigger antiroll bars, lowered springs that are 65-percent stiffer, and race-bred shocks. The suspension package lowers the car by 1.5 inches.

With regards to the Shelby GT’s looks, you’ll have a choice between the white or black, with silver Le Mans-style racing stripes and Shelby GT badging. Priving will be around $35,000—about a $5,000-$7,000 premium over a Mustang GT.

No incentive on Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX: 2007 Ford Edge

Ford has announced that it will launch the 2007 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX -- without cash rebates. This of course is part of the automaker’s efforts to curb the company’s incentive spending.

Both crossovers will go on sale in November. And although pricing won't be announced until later this year, the Edge is expected to carry a base price in the mid-$20,000 range. The Lincoln MKX on the other hand, is likely to carry a base price in the mid-$30,000 range. Ford expects to sell 120,000 units of the Edge annually. Volume projection for the MKX is yet to be provided.
